FAQ’s

How is tutoring beneficial for my child?

A supplemental education provider can help your child catch up in a particular subject area, stay on track with their current curriculum, or get ahead in a topic of interest.  Achieving success academically provides children with a sense of confidence and a foundation from which they can pursue interests in all areas of life.

What grade level does Kensa serve and for which subjects is tutoring available?

The instructors at Kensa offer tutoring in all academic subjects for students in kindergarten through 8th grade. Tutoring is available for reading, mathematics, science, writing, and test-preparation.

What is Kensa’s philosophy?

The way in which children process information and knowledge is as individual as a thumbprint.  Despite the need for structure and curriculum in the classroom, it is truly difficult to apply a “cookie-cut” approach that will satisfy the diversity of each student’s learning style.  Kensa’s tutoring environment identifies a student’s strengths and weaknesses and then develops a program that will expand and build upon the learning approach of the student.

Does Kensa do assessments?

Yes, we assess student’s reading level using the Scholastic Reading Inventory™ (SRI). SRI is a reading comprehension test that assesses students' reading levels, tracks students' reading growth over time, matches readers to text, and helps guide instruction according to students' needs. Also, we try to gather as much information as possible about each student and his/her needs. If appropriate, we will ask the family to provide us with recent report cards, achievement testing, writing samples, math tests, etc.  Each Kensa instructor may then, as part of the initial session, do some informal evaluation.  This informal evaluation will help round out the picture and enable us to design a program that best fits the needs of the student. We are happy to contact your child’s teacher with your permission.

Does Kensa provide in-home tutoring?

We believe that having students come to our center provides a more focused approach. Supplies and resources are immediately accessible and distractions are minimal. This is the best learning environment for our students.

What are the benefits of learning in small groups?

Each child brings a unique learning style and set of experiences to the group setting. Small groups increase children’s self-esteem, sense of responsibility, independent thinking, peer learning, and respect for diversity. At Kensa students work for 60 minutes with an instructor and no more than two other students.  The instructor can then spend targeted time with each child while the other two work independently; this not only helps the children stay focused while exploring independence and self-discipline, but each child is setting an example for one another.  The end result is that children are building confidence in their ability to learn, to progress to the next level and ultimately, to attain whatever goal is before them.

Who are Kensa instructors?

Our instructors come from a variety of backgrounds. Some teach in public or independent schools, others are former teachers, and others have training at the graduate level. Kensa’s trained teachers provide personalized instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, test-preparation, and science.

Does Kensa guarantee results?

One of the most important factors in ensuring results is regular attendance – physically and mentally!  The commitment and motivation demonstrated must be reciprocated between student and instructor.   Without it, there is little foundation for achieving results.  If a student regularly attends a Kensa tutoring program and applies the learnings from session to session and in the classroom, improvement will be apparent.

Does Kensa ensure confidentiality?

Yes.  Ensuring confidentiality is a high priority at Kensa. We keep all client files and information strictly confidential, unless a parent requests, in writing, that their child’s file be released to or shared with anyone else.

How does Kensa keep parents informed about a child’s progress?

Kensa offers regular opportunities to discuss student progress. Parents are always welcomed to request a conference or telephone appointment with their child’s instructor.

Does Kensa provide psycho neurological evaluation?

If a child needs a complete psycho neurological evaluation, we offer referrals to our affiliated program, Bright Minds Institute (www.brightmindsinstitute.com). Kensa and Bright Minds work collaboratively in specialized academic tutoring which includes coordination of academic remediation with teachers, parents, and other professionals working with the individual.
